Metal Screw Extrusion, state of the art and beyond

Sammendrag

Metal Screw Extrusion (MSE) is an exciting process, now on the verge of industrialization for recycling of post-consumer scrap. MSE utilizes the high degree of deformation to break oxide skins and form metallic bonding in a single step, generating bulk full-density materials. Severe plastic deformation corresponding to equivalent strain in the range 10-15, or even higher can be achieved depending on running parameters. This high degree of deformation can further be employed to form sophisticated materials, such as bulk composites, nano composites, particle reinforced metals, or fine grained materials. The screw extrusion process has been studied in terms of flow, strain and environmental impact. Furthermore, a range of non-ferrous materials has been characterized and manufactured by MSE. However, there are likely a vast range of applications to be explored further down the line. The presentation aim to review the previous work as well as explore possible future applications, utilizing the current knowledge and extrapolating on possible future technical improvements, comparing to other state of the art processes such as ConformTM, ECAE, HPTE, etc.
