Akma 3 - Logbook Day 8 - Our researcher on board

Beckett is a postdoctoral investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department. He is interested in developing instrumentation to monitor human impacts on the ocean, particularly greenhouse gases and microplastics. During this expedition, he is operating the SAGE instrument (1°picture), developed at WHOI, which measures methane using a deep-sea membrane inlet, laser spectroscopy, and a hollow core optical fiber. During these intense days on board, Beckett and the Akma scientists and engineers, have been using sage to investigate the methane concentrations near cold seep habitats and where gas is bubbling from the seafloor.
