Sammendrag
Sexual selection is the selection on the variance in mating success, when some individuals manage to mate more often and with more mates than others. This variance can occur if there is competition for mating opportunities among same-sex individuals. Mating competition can affect the variance in reproductive success and the strength of selection on a certain trait, because in highly competitive situations selection can be stronger. In the two spotted goby, males compete for females early in the breeding season, while later in the season male competition is relaxed and females compete for males. In such a system, one could expect male traits, like size, to be more important for reproductive success early in the season. In birds, mark and re-sighting studies in nest boxes have been used successfully to study the effect of certain traits on individual reproductive success. Here, I will discuss the opportunities and challenges for a similar approach in fish populations, based on my experiences from the last two years and some preliminary data.
