Summary of the start, motivation and developement of my research in olfaction, taste, learing and memory in insects. It started at the Max-Planck-Institute, Seewiesen, in Abteilung Schneider, the pioner of insect olfaction. Here most of the research for my dr.philos. degree was carried out. This period also included a research stay at the University of Gothenburg. After receiving a Fulbright Fellowship I went to the USA, Cornell University and State University of New York, Syracuse, and started to work on olfactory receptor neurons in bark beetles, which continued at the University of Odense, where I worked for four years as associate professor before returning to Norway, first as associate professor and later as full professor at the University of Trondheim, now the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. During collaboration with the research group of John Hildebrand, University of Arizona, Tucson and of Randolf Menzel, University of Berlin, I developed further my research in chemosensory coding, learning and memory in insects and built up a small reseach group with graduate students, post.docs and guest researchers.
