An Introduction to The Finite Element Method

Sammendrag

The finite element method is the dominant approach used for structural analysis. Moreover, the method can be applied to a wide variety of problems in engineering mechanics - like heat conduction and fluid flow. The extensive literature on the finite element method is illustrated in these lecture notes by reference to some of the many textbooks. The present text is introductory and limited to structural mechanics, and is oriented towards the qualified use of the method rather than research. This text is presented for readers that have undergraduate courses in calculus as well as statics including matrix methods for frames and trusses and some background in the 2 D - theory of elasticity. Matrix operations must be understood. The finite elements that are presented have been selected partly to provide an effective learning of the method and partly to provide an overview of the most effective elements. Moreover, attention is paid to modelling - idealisation and mesh selection to achieve required analysis accuracy. The emphasis is placed on applications to plated metal structures.
