Sammendrag

Background The aim of this project is to improve students’ ability and knowledge within practical precise computations in satellite positioning with GPS and at the same time to bring the competence of using new GPS data processing software to the Department. Description This study was composed in collaboration with "Statens Kartverk" to examine two different GPS processing software packages. The two scientific programs GAMIT and GIPSY compute position and velocity from GPS observations. The estimation processes for these two software packages are different with respect to their observables, which are input to the numerical calculations. Based on the continuous logged data from 01.01.2000 to 11.10.2003 the co-ordinates and velocities for 10 GPS stations are estimated. These stations are located in six different countries in the northern part of Europe. With a large amount of observations there exists a good basis for reliable estimations. Using approximately the same procedure and using the same assumptions for both software packages the results can be compared. This comparison will hopefully give the Division of Geomatics at NTNU and "Statens Kartverk" valuable information about the programs and their advantages/disadvantages. The work done in this thesis has also given NTNU necessary competence to use the GAMIT software. The GAMIT/GLOBK is a UNIX based package which is available free of charge for universities.
