Is there a common mediating factor in language and motor impairments?

In an attempt to provide a step-wise methodology aimed at identifying common neurological factors, underlying motor and language impairmen ts where they occur together, a group of language impaired subjects w ere tested more comprehensively for language impairment using the Ill inois Test of Psycholinguistic Ability (ITPA) and for motor impairmen t using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (Movement ABC). On the basis of these tests, four of the sample were found to exhibit both language (particularly indexed by problems with visual closure and sound blending) and motor impairment (particularly indexed by pro blems with manual dexterity and static balance). Further detailed exa mination of the findings led to the conclusion that the combination o f language and motor deficits exhibited by this select group of child ren may be a consequence of inter- and/or intra-right-hemispheric dis connection.
