Volatile profiles of arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus L.) cultivars

Sammendrag

The berries of the Finish wild arctic bramble, Rubus arcticus L., are an important raw material for the traditional liquor industry in Finland. Cultivation trials have been carried out since Carl von Linnaeus himself transferred the first arctic bramble plants to the Royal Botanical garden in Stockholm/Uppsala (Sweden) in 1737. Unfortunately, a breakthrough in the successful cultivation of this plant is still awaited, despite several cultivation attempts carried out in Finland since 1950. The genuine and characteristic aroma of arctic bramble berries, however makes continuous trials and the breeding of this plant worthwhile. About eighty of the most important aroma volatile compounds of arctic bramble berries have been detected and identified by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in samples of cultivars “Klooni”, “Mesma”, “Mespi”, and “Pima”, and one unnamed breeding line. The most characteristic aroma-impact compound mesifurane (2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-2,3-dihydro-3-furanone) was detected at high levels in berries of all old cultivars and one new breeding line. This new selection has been shown to be resistant against downy mildew, which is considered an important selection criteria together with the genuine aroma when selecting for new arctic bramble cultivars.
