International Conference on Sustainability in the Cement and Concrete Industry Proceedings

Preface The cement and concrete industry is an important part of the construction- and civil engineering industry, affecting consumption and emissions related to the development of modern society. The term “sustainable development” and the associated shift of paradigm in research on cement and concrete has so far, it seems, followed a near-exponential increase in attention the last couple of decades. The attention of most producers, consumers or customers, decision makers etc of the concrete industry has been like the attention of most people in most branches throughout most companies in most countries. There is a sense that this time dependant development is now in a very steep and increasing part of the curve. The scientific consensus is that the attention is neither without cause nor just another media phenomenon. In the call for papers of this conference we invited papers in a broad specter of issues on technology for the cement and concrete industry to improve sustainability and become more competitive. The aim was to present and discuss research and development related to the fundamental issues resource and energy consumption and emissions related to the cement and concrete industry. Emphasis was put on possibilities to minimize and help solving environmental problems in society by environmentally friendly and advanced production and use of cementitious materials. The papers are divided into themes of the sustainability issues (resource, emissions, energy etc) in accordance with the call. Therefore a few papers might cover more than one of the chosen four themes. This we believe is just like in conferences divided into traditional themes of cement and concrete (modeling and/or measuring/testing binders and their hydration, aggregate, mechanical properties, durability, new etc). We hope that this presentation of research on cement and concrete will increase the interest towards our industries’ research, development, innovations etc. The aim is to find new possibilities to contribute to meet our needs without compromising future generations’ abilities to meet their needs. The present conference is a result of the contributions of the speakers, authors, review work by the members of the scientific committee, cooperation and responsibility of the secretariat of the Norwegian Concrete Association; Mrs Siri Engen and Mr. Knut R Berg and support of our sponsors.
