Sammendrag
Luther’s Anthropology and Lutheran Theology The discussion between Martin Luther and Erasmus on the free will is representative for the current discussion on Lutheran anthropology and the question of sanctification. The author discusses critically whether Luther’s teaching on justification is to be understood in merely forensic or even in mystical categories, taking into account the Finnish suggestion that Luther’s use of conformitas Christi is a Lutheran variant of the Orthodox doctrine of theosis. Martin Luther realises that all anthropological resources are utterly powerless before God and in the face of sin and death. According to Luther, true humanity is created ex nihilo, when the old man dies in baptism, and the new man is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him (Col 3:10). The inner fellowship with Christ must precede the outer, moral following of Him. This may be called the real presence of Christ in the believer. Lutheran theology, following Luther’s anthropology, is first and foremost christosentric.
