Sammendrag
This chapter examines the current state of the world's fisheries and discusses future trends, relating both of these to the world demand for fish. The article identifies a range of threats to supplies of capture and aquacultured fish, and discusses the constraints on further growth. It concludes that while we are bumping up against limits to production, better governance (including better institutions and management) and the reduction of world poverty can ameliorate shortages over the short term. Individual populations may suffer tremendously from local declines in landings, however, even in the short term.
