Sammendrag
The Moro response is one of several reflexes that are used to test the neurological status of the newborn. The Moro response is characterised by its symmetry, and asymmetry is thought to be a sign of neurological damage. Motor asymmetries have been found in several neonatal reflexes, and are generally stronger on the right hand side. This was also the case in the current experiment, where two different ways were used to elicit the Moro response. The right hand was found to have a significantly earlier onset than the left hand, independent of the method of elicitation. The findings support earlier research and suggest that the origins of cerebral lateralisation in humans arise prenatally.
