Hard rock tunnel boring has seen great improvements over the last years, and the state of the art is impressive. However, there are several areas o technology that needs improvement to make TBM tunnelling more competitive. Topics such as cutter and machine design, back-up equipment and other service functions behind the face, rock support and contract, are trea ted in this paper.
