Sammendrag
Based on archival sources, this paper offers an analysis of communist policies of science in the field of economics in the beginning of and during high Stalinist era. It highlights the period's essential tension between the norms and criteria of the epistemological regime of radical class relativism on the one hand and the need and demand of economic policy-mak ing for empirically based positive knowledge. Before Stalin's death, class relativism ruled supreme which resulted in a protracted stagnation of research activity within the academic institutional sphere. But already Stalin's last work, The Economic Problems of Socialism in the USSR, indicated that a new swing of the pendulum had begun and that the interests of th ose controlling the economic-social process would come and assert themselves at the expense of class-relativist purity.
