Time-depth and multi-functionality in the landscapes of Jæren, South-West Norway

Sammendrag

In the most industrialized agricultural landscape of Norway, the region of Jæren in the South-West, the focus of farmers as well as bureaucrats has been directed towards the lowlands with an ?industrious approach? that is unique in a Norwegian context. However, the fertile and at first sight flat plains in Jæren have been part of an integrated agrarian economy where the mires, moors, forests and hilly areas/low mountains have been used to sustain the agrarian household. This form of resource use where outlying land has been used for collection of fodder, pasture land and turf for burning are largely abandoned practices. The imprints in the landscape as well as archaeological remains bear witness of a landscape serving many functions through a long time period. However, the moors and hills eastwards at the upper, more marginal parts of Jæren are more or less ?white spots? on the map regarding documented landscape history. This lack of knowledge becomes a pressing managerial issue today when, as part of the high-productive mentality of farming, mires, grasslands and hills are either cultivated or planted with forest ? activities not known for their sensitivity towards cultural heritage. Jæren has in fact a very bad record in loss of cultural heritage mainly due to high-productive farming, urbanization and road construction. Of current interest that adds to this landscape being a landscape of many (multi) functions, are planned wind-farms causing tension over land-use. This oral presentation presents the results from a study of the land-use history of the upper parts of Jæren, more specifically one case-area in Time municipality and one in Hå municipality, and the views and priorities of those who can be seen as the main landscapers ? the farmers, public managers and wind-farm entrepreneurs.
