Sammendrag
The focus of this study is an environmental survey and evaluation of the environmental status
of surface water which has been conducted around Statoil`s Oil Sands area in Alberta,
Canada. Water samples for dissolved and acid-dissolved concentration of elements for
analysis on ICP-MS have been taken. Important parameters such as pH, SUVA254 and
dissolved organic carbon have also been measured.
The aim of this study is to follow-up on the environmental survey carried out by a Master`s
student in 2010, and see if the continued production has resulted in higher concentrations of
elements in the area. The aim of the previous survey in 2010 was to map the background
concentrations in the area before production started.
The results of the study show that there are no major changes from the previous survey, as
well as highlighting that the water quality of the Christina River in general is good. Most of
the elements have concentrations below the guidelines for the protection of aquatic life.
Experiments of a new type of passive sampler, Metrox, have also been part of this project.
This expands upon the findings of a Master`s thesis from 2009/2010, where initial
experiments was conducted, with various electrodes. The aim of this new study was to further
test the Metrox in lab. However there were delays from the company making the Metrox and
the experiments therefore did not commence until February 2012. The test results showed that
the Metrox was too unstable for further testing in the field as a result of a two-electrode
system being used.
