History teaching in multicultural society - challenges and models

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The aim of the project is to identify key areas of history content that cause difficulties in teaching and understanding for the pupils of multicultural background. As result, the project will elaborate special method and tools for history teaching in multicultural communities for better mutual understanding, tolerance and encouragement of multicultural dialog and solidarity.

The overall objective of the project is to support teacher in history teaching in multicultural social environment and to encourage exchange of good practices and knowledge between Bulgarian and Norwegian experts. 

Specific objectives of the project are:

  • To analyse challenges posed by multicultural society and needs of intercultural education
  • To develop teaching materials to help increasing mutual understanding
  • To develop empathy and mutual understanding within increasingly heterogeneous society
  • To explore new methods of learning
  • To identify competencies to be acquired by students and the skills to be attained by teachers to teach those competencies
  • To identify strategies for partnership with other history professionals
  • To build up of network among the lecturers in order to ensure permanent exchange of useful practices and ideas  
  • To develop  pilot mechanism for exchange of examples of modern knowledge and good practice in history teaching
  • To develop communication skills in the classroom with students from different communities
  • To encourage usage of visual sources and other historical materials for providing insights into the past.

The project includes the following activities:

  • Activity 1: Study of the models for history education in secondary schools in Bulgaria working in multicultural communities and regions (achievements and challenges)
  • Activity 2: Exchange of good practices in the field history teaching in multicultural environment.
  • Activity 3: Development of innovative model for history teaching in the secondary schools in Bulgaria.
  • Activity 4: presentation of the innovative model for history teaching in multicultural environment.
