The aim of this project is to highlight and discuss how a song can be didactical on the music’s own premises.
This project includes an analysis of a disco song that has been read both as an adaptation of a bebop melody and as topology for reflection about the music it produces. The adaptation analysis focuses on the musical changes and similarities in the adaptation from one genre/medium to another, while the topological analysis focuses on the song as a rhetorical space and place for reflection. The starting point for this discussion is the claim that you can learn music through music, not only by talking about it or exercising its elements with help from a teacher. The reception of music, through listening, can give important insight and knowledge. This way of learning does not depend on a classroom or other formal learning arenas. It can happen anywhere at any time. These aspects of knowledge and learning can be added to the ongoing discussions about informal learning in music education research.
