Material Appearance Network for Education and Research

Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag

The INTPART project Material Appearance Network for Education and Research (MANER) will enable research groups within and beyond the ongoing FRIPRO Toppforsk project Measuring and Understanding Visual Appearance (MUVApp) to establish and strengthen long term relations for collaborative research and education activities within the field of material appearance measurement and understanding. The visual appearance of a material is generally classified into four appearance attributes (colour, gloss, texture, translucency) that interact with each other. This interaction is very complex and processed by the brain together with other information such as memory and viewing environment, to finally determine the perceived appearance of a surface or object. The concept of visual appearance is currently far from fully understood, neither from the metrological nor perceptual point of view. Research is in this field is thus needed ranging from fundamental aspects to high impact applications in emerging fields such as 3D printing and product design.

Metode

MANER will build a strong and robust collaborative network of well-established academic partners in four priority countries USA, India, China, and Japan. Through MANER the network aims to establish and strengthen long term relations for collaborations within the scope of research and education into the field of the understanding visual appearance of materials. The objectives will be achieved through several  activities in the field of education and research like joint training schools, conference special sessions, workshops, student and staff mobility, and support for the development of courses with collaborative teaching, recognition, and contribution towards existing master and doctoral programs at the Department of Computer Science, NTNU.

To accomplish the objectives of MANER, we define the following main activities:

1. Joint training activities targeted towards master, doctoral and post-doctoral students, and researchers from the participating institutions,

2. Mobility of students and researchers among the partners for research and educational collaboration, joint supervision and access to laboratory facilities across the network partners,

3. Joint development and accreditation of an advanced level master course on visual appearance measurement and understanding.
