Description Description

Title

The role of perfectionism and controlling conditions in Elite performers` motivational processes in Ballet, Music and Sport

Summary

Within the framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study aimed to examine the antecedents of maladaptive motivational processes, through investigating when and why perfectionistic tendencies might operate in debilitative ways in a sample of 171 junior elite performers from Ballet, Music, and Sport. The study used a cross-sectional moderated mediation design. The results showed that having perfectionistic concerns in controlling conditions exposed the performers to higher risks of developing introjected motivation, and experiencing exhaustion and anxiety via frustration of their need for competence. Furthermore, the findings revealed that the higher levels of perfectionistic concerns and controlling conditions, the higher the likelihood and severity of experiencing maladaptive motivational processes. In conclusion, this study implies that coaches/teachers of elite junior performers might play a key role in avoiding competence frustration and ill-being through avoiding the misuse of controlling mechanisms and instead facilitate autonomy support. Keywords: Self-determination theory, Motivation, Perfectionism, Elite Performance, Talent-Development.
