This is a newly started educational pilot project that was implemented in the undergraduate study of Computer Science in 2002, and then formally started on 12th of March 2003. It is also implemented in the Teacher Education.
Starting in 2002, the Department of Computer Science at Nesna University College has used the example of sexual abuse of children as a tool for teaching Social Informatics to undergraduate students in Computer Science.
The pilot project is run in cooperation with Save the Children Norway and the Norwegian National Crime Squad.
The Computer Science students provides both the Save the Children Norway and the National Criminal Investigation Service with reports on various topics such as secure chat, camera phones and possible abuse, Freenet as a tool for sexual abuse, etc.
A preliminary study indicates that the use of this project has raised both the willingness of students to learn Social Informatics and their skills in the various topics of Social Informatics.
In 2005 work was started on extending the project to the students of Teacher Education and their lecturers, with the aim of teaching basic computer knowledge to both parties. The project is also a part of the Learning Network project in the southern parts of Nordland county, providing lower and upper secondary school teachers` with knowledge about sexual abuse of children and the use of ICT by both victim and abuser.
